Bullion – Pet Sounds: In the Key of Dee

What happens if fandom meets artistic ability? In 2007 the underground West London producer Bullion (Nathan Jenkins) took two sources of inspiration to make something new. He self-released a ‘mash-up’ album that fuses the 1966 record Pet Sounds from The Beach Boys with a J Dilla style of production to make a tribute to the legend, hence the name Pet Sounds: In the Key of Dee. In the footsteps of Dilla he experimented with chopping techniques and transformed the already angelic harmonies into heavy beats. Eventually this free mixtape resulted in a masterpiece that spread all over the Internet within days. Bullion is an artist that ambitious mash-up artists should devote themselves to. He managed to maintain the nostalgia of The Beach Boys, and yet at the same time it sounds fresh and innovatory. The compact unit can easily be played the whole thing threw and even encourages to multiple replays. Pet Sounds: In the Key of Dee is therefore a worthy recommendation for true Dilla or Beach Boys fans.
